LATE ONE AFTERNOON in December 1993, a few days after arriving in Uzbekistan, my travelling companions and I ventured into Tashkent’s Jewish quarter. Meandering through the narrow, maze-like streets, searching for signs of Jewish life, we stopped passers-by to ask if they could direct us to a synagogue.
